"The Umbrella" is my thesis film at Emily Carr University. This film is a personal reflection on the delicate intersection between childhood and growing up. As someone raised in Taiwan and surrounded by Taoist culture, I’ve always been drawn to the rich symbolism of folklore and the active presence of the spiritual world. This film was inspired by the solemn yet oddly endearing guardians I often saw in temples—figures that once frightened me, but now feel familiar and nostalgic. Hoping to express the emotional complexities of growing up, I chose the narrative style of a picture book—gentle, innocent, and disarming. It softens the heaviness of life with simplicity, yet speaks quietly to the unbearable lightness of being, leaving behind a bittersweet trace.
